Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, can be source of distress and embarrassment. However, hyperhidrosis injections have emerged as an effective solution for those who suffer from this condition.

Treatment Information

What is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition characterised by abnormally excessive sweating, not necessarily related to heat or exercise. People with hyperhidrosis may sweat so much that it soaks through their clothes or drips off their hands. This excessive sweating can disrupt normal activities and cause social anxiety or embarrassment.

What Are Hyperhidrosis Injections?

Hyperhidrosis injections typically involve the use of botulinum toxin, a neurotoxic protein that is used to treat a variety of medical conditions. When injected in small doses into the skin, it temporarily blocks the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands, effectively reducing sweating in the treated area. This treatment is mostly used for underarm sweating but can also be effective for the hands and feet.

What Results Can I Expect?

Patients receiving hyperhidrosis injections can expect a significant reduction in sweating. The results usually become noticeable within a week after treatment, with the full effects typically observed within two weeks. The treatment can provide relief from excessive sweating for about 6 to 12 months. After this period, the procedure can be repeated. Many patients experience a dramatic improvement in their quality of life, with decreased anxiety and increased comfort in social and professional situations.

What are the potential risks / side effects of this procedure?

While hyperhidrosis injections are generally safe, they can have potential side effects, including:

  • Temporary muscle weakness: This is particularly relevant when treating the hands, where injections can lead to a temporary decrease in grip strength.
  • Pain at the injection site: Some discomfort during and after the procedure is common.
  • Bruising or swelling: This usually resolves quickly.
  • Rare side effects: These can include flu-like symptoms or headaches.

However, by properly administering the injection, a skilled injector can help minimise these risks and ensure the best results possible.

How do I prepare for the treatment?

To prepare for hyperhidrosis injections, it’s essential to take the following steps:

  • Consult with our medical spa’s injectors: Before the treatment begins, our injectors will ask you a series of questions to ensure your suitability.
  • Avoid certain medications: As advised by the injector, certain medications and supplements that increase the risk of bruising should be avoided.
  • Shave underarm area: If the underarms are being treated, shave them at least 24 hours before the procedure to reduce irritation.
  • Avoid using antiperspirant or deodorant: On the day of treatment, if underarms are being treated.

What happens during treatment?

The area to be treated will be cleaned and a topical numbing cream may be applied to minimise discomfort. The injector then administers a series of small injections directly into the area of excessive sweating. The procedure is relatively quick, typically taking about 30 to 45 minutes.

What should I do after my treatment?

Following your hyperhidrosis injections, it is important to:

  • Avoid intense exercise: For at least 24 hours post-treatment to prevent spreading of the toxin.
  • Stay upright: Do not lie down for a few hours after the procedure.
  • Avoid massaging or applying pressure: To the treated area for a few days.
  • Follow specific instructions: Provided by our medical spa’s injectors for optimal results.
